Europe Latvia Latvian Hockey League

The Latvian Hockey League (Latvijas Hokeja Liga) is the top professional ice hockey league in Latvia. It was founded in 1931 and currently consists of 8 teams. The league is governed by the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation.

 

The Latvian Hockey League is considered to be one of the top ice hockey leagues in the Baltic region and is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The league has produced several notable players, including current NHL players like Zemgus Girgensons, Andris Dzerins, and Kaspars Daugavins.

 

Latvia has a strong ice hockey tradition and has had a national team since 1931. The Latvian national team has participated in several international tournaments, including the Olympic Games, the IIHF World Championships, and the Euro Hockey Tour.

 

In recent years, Latvia has been successful in ice hockey, with the national team consistently ranked among the top 10 teams in the world. The country hosted the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, where the Latvian team reached the quarterfinals.
